I recently attended the Women in Leadership Conference in Melbourne run by the Women Leaders Institute. I left the conference feeling truly inspired and motivated to continue to fuel my career goals.
Here are my top take away quotes from the powerful two day conference featuring brilliant women from all different career journey's;
‘Advice to your younger self’;
1. “It's ok to be un-perfect” - Sadhana Smiles, CEO Property Management, Harcourts International
2. “The people in their 40's and 50's don’t feel like grown ups either” – Michelle Dixon, CEO and Partner, Maddocks
3. “Be loud, bold and believe in yourself” - Christine Wyatt, Deputy Secretary Planning, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning
4. “Seize every opportunity, even if it doesn’t feel like an opportunity, it is” – Darren Fewster, Executive Director, Global HR Shared Services, Telstra
Other key quotes;
5. “Don’t just rely on your own experiences or solutions when identifying and preparing for challenges, be brace and talk to others” – Kay Hoy, Deputy Director, Monash University
6. “Life is too short to work for a bad boss or an indifferent boss” – Annabel Crabb, Host Back In Time For Dinner & Kitchen Cabinet
7. “When you’re client is speaking, you have nothing important to say” – Angela Ferguson, Group Managing Director, Asia Pacific, ThoughtWorks
8. “Don’t be afraid of failure, we all fail” - Sally Capp, Lord Major, City of Melbourne
9. “Why try to fit in when you were born to stand out” – Sally Capp, Lord Major, City of Melbourne
10. “There’s no one way to be successful” – Dayle Stevens, General Manager, AGL
Another key theme that came up throughout the event was confidence. Confidence isn’t always automatic in all of us, however it is a skill you can build on. A great place to start as expressed by Jenny Bailey, from City of Melbourne, was the importance of curating confidence; "Be clear on your purpose, have confidence in your strengths & develop your mindset to support your goals".
I hope you have enjoyed the write up and a special thank you to all the brave and admirable speakers for sharing their journey and experiences.
Thanks TM
